Art Appreciation
for Toddlers
Nursery
Age 1 Curriculum Suggestions

Art Appreciation is a subject that can be enjoyed by all ages. An easy way to introduce an appreciation of art to toddlers, is through picture book illustrations. Picture books are easily available through public libraries and the variety of art is enormous. Our toddlers are already used to being read to and the opportunity to look through another book with mom or dad will be a happy experience. One illustrator has been chosen every 2 lessons, but each lesson has a book suggestion. You are welcome to choose different selections from mine. I tried to choose illustrators and books that are visually appealing to young children. Some stories will be beyond most young children's comprehension levels. Use the books mainly for the illustrations. Discuss what you see in each picture and tell your toddler what you like about each illustration. Try to find one or two times each week where you can look through the illustrations together. Then during the weeks find a place to leave the book open to a favorite page. This can be on a shelf that you walk by often, then stop and remind your toddler of something on that page.
