Scheduling the Nursery Age 1 Curriculum

The following suggestions are just that, suggestions.  This is what works for us.  Feel free to adapt the times to suit your family's needs.  You will see that most activities can be done when you are already busy taking care of your toddler.  It will not take much extra time each day to provide your toddler with many learning experiences.

If you like, you can set aside a block of about 1 hour in either the morning or evening to spend with your toddler playing at these different activities.  I call this toddler time.  Follow your child's interest, you may only spend 15 minutes together one day and an hour the next day.  Continue as long as your toddler is having fun.  Never force your toddler to do any of these activities.

Note: Each lesson is meant to last approximately 2 weeks in length.  To make it easier to cover all the different subject areas, I have chosen to spread some of the subjects out over the two weeks.  You will do some subjects every week, but others in either week 1 or 2.  This is just a suggestion.  You are welcome to alter this to suit your needs.  You may want to do all the subjects every week.  Make it work for you.

WEEK ONE

Literature:  Read the selection daily as a bedtime story or at another regular time.

Bible:  Read the Bible selection in the morning when your toddler is alert.  You could start your morning toddler time with this reading.

Nursery Rhymes:  Recite/sing daily while changing & dressing your toddler.

Speech/Vocabulary:  Emphasize the words or phrases for this lesson during the appropriate time daily.  Lesson suggestions fall under dressing time, bath time, play time, and eating time.

Indoor Games:  Play the game with your toddler in either your morning or evening toddler time.

Classical Music:  Listen to the selection daily as background music during free play time.

Children's Songs:  Share the children's song in your morning or evening toddler time.

Foreign Languages:  Share a song in the Foreign Language of your choice during your morning or evening toddler time.  Show the picture cards for the vocabulary words at meal times.  Review these words whenever you come across them in daily life.

Exercise:  If you choose to help your toddler exercise each day, a good time is in the morning.  Not right after eating but before your toddler is tired.  You could also exercise after nap time.

Arts and Crafts:  This activity can be done once or twice during the week in one of your morning or evening toddler times.  If your toddler loves to draw, allow him or her to draw every day.

WEEK TWO

Literature:  Read the selection daily as a bedtime story or at another regular time.

Bible:  Read the Bible selection in the morning when your toddler is alert.  You could start your morning toddler time with this reading.

Poetry:  Share the poem choice when your toddler is alert.  It can be part of your morning or evening toddler time.

Sign Language:  Practice signs daily at the appropriate times.  For example:  show your chosen gesture for book at story time each day.  Always review previously learned signs by using them often.

Outdoor Games:  Play during your morning or evening toddler time.  If the weather is not suitable to an outdoor game, choose another indoor game for the week.

Musical Exploration:  Explore the musical suggestion with your toddler during your morning or evening toddler time.

Lullabies:  Sing or play a lullaby recording for your toddler before both nap time and bedtime.

Puppetry:  Play with the puppets during your morning or evening toddler time.

Nature Study:  This can be done twice in the week at 2 of your morning or evening toddler times.  Saturdays are also fun for nature study as the whole family can get involved.

Art Appreciation:  Look at the selected picture book illustrations with your toddler once or twice each week.  Additionally, place the book, open to a favorite page, on a shelf you pass by often.
