Brightly Beaming
Steps to Reading Program

Step Four:
Story of the Week
Adaptable for Ages 4 - 7
by Katrina Lybbert

Curriculum Outline

This program will cover a whole year of learning.  I have created a schedule that lasts 40 weeks.  You are welcome to adapt the schedule for your own family.  This is just a suggestion.  Have fun with it!

Your child should know all the basic sounds of the letters that were covered in the Letter of the Week curriculum, and many of the sounds from the Sound of the Week curriculum, before beginning this one.

Optional:  You could combine the Sound of the Week and Story of the Week curriculums together.  Alternate each week between the two.  This is just an alternative suggestion for those who have very eager young readers.  It is much simpler to do them separately.  But choose what works best for your child.

Every few weeks you will teach new sight words and then read stories that will begin your child on a path to lifelong reading.  There are game suggestions to help teach the sight words.  Go only as fast as your child can manage.

A nice resource for lists of sight words taught to beginning readers is the Dolch Word List.  You can refer to this list if you would like to teach even more sight words than are found in the Story of the Week curriculum.
