Step Three:
Sound of the Week
Adaptable for Ages 3 - 6

Curriculum Outline

This program will cover a whole year of learning.  I have created a schedule that lasts 36 weeks.  You are welcome to adapt the schedule for your own family.  This is just a suggestion.  Have fun with it!

Your child should know all the basic sounds of the letters that were covered in the Letter of the Week curriculum before beginning this one.

Each week you will teach a new sound that will help your child learn to read.  Along with each sound I have chosen a theme that will focus on the sound for that week.  There are a lot of sounds covered in this curriculum.  You may wish to simplify and choose to spend two weeks on each of the sounds, especially on sounds your child needs more help with.

A resource I highly recommend as a "must have" reference book for teaching reading is: The ABC's and All Their Tricks: The Complete Reference Book of Phonics and Spelling by Margaret M. Bishop.  This book can be a great guide to you as you use this "Sound of the Week" curriculum.
